The Story of Tega Cay
Tega Cay began as a planned lakeside development in 1970 when a Charlotte-based developer, the Ervin Company, started building a community on about 1,600 wooded acres along Lake Wylie. The name “Tega Cay,” often interpreted as meaning “beautiful peninsula,” was part of a broader Polynesian-inspired theme used throughout the early development seen in architecture, street names, and community design.
In its early years, developers focused on amenities first constructing roads, a clubhouse, golf course, tennis courts, and pools before homes were built. The neighborhood originally operated as a gated community and even had shared telephone lines, reflecting the era’s infrastructure.
By the early 1980s, financial difficulties from the original developer led residents to take control of their future. In 1982, the community officially incorporated as a city to protect property owners’ interests and manage local services more effectively. This shift also transitioned responsibilities for amenities and services to local governance.
Today, Tega Cay’s origins as a resort-style, master-planned community still shape its identity, blending residential living with recreational amenities and a strong sense of local control.
